Ants

Among the world’s most advanced and successful social insects, living in vast, highly organized colonies with one or more queens at the center, surrounded by willing workers. One of the most familiar is the black carpenter ant, found throughout the eastern United States.

Make a home for minibeasts

When I was growing up we called them “creepy-crawlies” or “bugs.” Nowadays we often use the term “minibeasts” to cover the thousands of insects and other invertebrates that we come across in our daily lives. These include true insects—such as flies, bees, wasps, butterflies, and moths (and their caterpillars) and various beetles and bugs—as well as other unrelated groups, such as spiders, snails, and slugs.

The best way to get to know minibeasts is to keep them yourself. By watching them grow and develop, and seeing how they change at different times in their life cycle, you will really begin to appreciate these tiny creatures.
